ART OF WINE LABELS- COOLHURST VINEYARD

In the realm of wine, labels serve a deeper purpose beyond merely identifying a bottle; they represent an artistic expression that narrates a tale, grabs the viewer's attention, and establishes the ambiance for the ensuing experience.

Coolhurst Vineyards, nestled in the picturesque High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in West Sussex, England, has taken this concept to new heights with their exceptional wine labels, blending heritage, innovation, and a keen eye for detail into each design.

A Heritage of Excellence

Coolhurst Vineyards is more than a wine producer; it's a testament to generations of passion and dedication. Founded by cousins Charlie and Will, who inherited the estate from their fathers, the vineyard represents a seamless blend of tradition and modernity. Charlie's background in advertising photography and Will's experiences in the British Army and international affairs bring a unique perspective to winemaking—one that cherishes heritage while embracing the future.

The journey begins with Lady Elizabeth, a sparkling rosé that embodies the essence of Coolhurst's vision. The acclaim it has received speaks volumes about the conviction and dedication poured into every aspect of the vineyard's operations.

The Artistry of Labels

Behind every great wine is a label that captivates the imagination and entices the senses. Coolhurst Vineyards recognized early on that their labels needed to be more than just identifiers; they had to be works of art that reflected the vineyard's rich history and commitment to quality.

Charlie, with his background in graphic design and advertising photography, brought a meticulous eye for detail and a flair for creativity to the label design process. Collaborating with the talented Will Parr, they set out to defy convention and create labels that would stand out in a sea of uniformity.

Unveiling the Coat of Arms

At the heart of Coolhurst's label design is the 18th-century coat of arms granted by King George III—a symbol of the vineyard's esteemed lineage. This coat of arms, originally combining both sides of the family, was reimagined to focus on Coolhurst's legacy, showcasing a modernized vector image that retained the essence of tradition while embracing contemporary design elements.

The use of spot varnish, embossing, debossing, and intricate cut-outs elevated the labels from ordinary to extraordinary, adding layers of texture and visual interest. Each label became a tactile experience, inviting wine enthusiasts to explore the story behind the wine.

Colors and Creativity

Coolhurst Vineyards didn't stop at aesthetics; they infused their labels with meaning and functionality. The use of colored ribbons corresponding to specific wine types, such as pink for rosé and gold for Blanc de Blancs, added a touch of elegance and practicality. Overprinting allowed for customization, from featuring Lady Elizabeth's signature on the rosé to highlighting unique varietals like The Miller's Tale Blanc de Noirs.

The evolution of the labels reflected not just the vineyard's growth but also its ability to adapt and innovate. The attention to detail extended to every aspect, ensuring that each bottle was not just a vessel for wine but a canvas for storytelling.

Recognition and Beyond

Coolhurst Vineyards' commitment to excellence in label design did not go unnoticed. Winning The Drinks Business Best English and Welsh Sparkling Wine Packaging award in 2022 was a testament to their dedication to pushing boundaries and setting new standards in the industry.

The success of Coolhurst's labels sparked a trend, inspiring other brands to rethink their approach to packaging and branding. What started as a project rooted in heritage and passion became a catalyst for innovation and creativity across the wine industry.

Coolhurst Vineyards' journey from a seventh-generation family estate to an award-winning producer is not just about making exceptional wines; it's about crafting an experience from vine to glass. Their labels, infused with history, creativity, and attention to detail, are a testament to the artistry behind winemaking.

As we raise a glass to celebrate the art of wine labels, let us toast to Coolhurst Vineyards—a beacon of tradition, innovation, and the timeless beauty of storytelling through design. Cheers to the art of wine, where every label is a masterpiece waiting to be savored.

I would like to express my gratitude to Charles and Will for providing invaluable information and for being integral parts of my project, the Art of Wine Labels. Thank you for your contributions and support!
